Use Your Gutters To Keep Your Foundation Strong

Gregory Walker

Water is usually seen as a beneficial power. However, one thing that most people overlook when they are talking about water is that it can be very destructive. Too much water in the wrong place at the wrong time can cause a lot of damage. This is true when it come to your foundation. If you get too much water around your foundation it can cause cracks and leaks. The best way to keep that from happening is to make sure that you have good gutters. Gutters make sure that all the water that runs off your roof ends up in one place—away from your foundation.

Types of Gutters

When it comes to your gutters, there are two basic kinds. You can choose to have sectional gutters or seamless gutters.

Sectional gutters

These are gutters that are made out of several sections that have to be fitted together when they are being installed at your house. One big problem with these gutters is the seams where the sections are connected. Those seams will be the point where the gutters start to fail first. Several pieces of something joined together are always going to be weaker than one continuous piece.

Seamless gutters

Seamless gutters—like those offered from K&R Roofing and Gutters and other locations—are made out of one long piece of guttering. The piece is trimmed to the right size when it is getting installed at your house. The installers will measure the roof where the gutters are going and cut the gutters to about the right size before they get to your house, and do the final adjustments when the gutters are being installed. The only places that there might be any connections in this kind of gutter is at the corners of your house.

Materials For Gutters

Your gutters can be made out of many different materials. Most of them can be made as sectional gutters. Not all of them come as seamless varieties, so if you want to have that, you will need to check with your gutter installation company to find out what materials are best for that.

Aluminum

Aluminum gutters are very lightweight. They are also very strong. They tend to have a fairly long life. You can find these gutters in both the sectional and seamless kinds. Gutters made out of aluminum also tend to be less expensive than some other options.

Vinyl

One nice thing about vinyl gutters is that the gutter company can get them up and installed quickly. They are likely the easiest kind of gutter to install. They are also lightweight, which reduces the load your roof has to bear. These gutters are generally only found as sectional gutters.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel gutters won't rust, which can be a big plus for gutters. However, you are going to pay more for them than you might for other options. They are generally only found as sectional gutters, but your gutter company may be able to find seamless stainless steel gutters if that's what you want.

The right gutters keep all the water coming off your roof from ending up right next to your foundation. If you have to replace your gutters, choose wisely.

About Me
A Welder in the Office

Hi, I'm Caroline. Welding has always been really fascinating to me. One day, when I was at work in my office, we had a leaky pipe in the ceiling. After calling a plumber, he called a welder who came to repair the large, open pipe. As we were all sitting there trying to work, the welder just came in and started repairing the pipe! I had never worked on a construction site before, and I probably never will. But I started thinking about what it would actually be like to work on a construction site, which led to me exploring construction themes and writing this blog!
