How To Properly Maintain Your Shingle Roof

Gregory Walker

You want to be sure you stay on top of your roof's condition by making sure to inspect your roof yearly. This way, you'll be able to catch small problems before they become big problems. If you have a fear of heights, then you want to invest in a good pair of binoculars so you can inspect your roof without needing to climb a ladder. Otherwise, make sure you have a sturdy ladder at your disposal. When you inspect your roof, you want to look for the following problems:

Shingles in need of replacing

Look at the condition of all your shingles. None of them should appear to be missing, cracked, curling, buckled or torn. If you notice any that need to be replaced, make a note of the location and replace them as soon as you can. You want to pay especially close attention to the shingles located near the edges of something, such as your air conditioning unit.

Look for cracks

Look for any type of cracks in caulking, around your pipe vents or anywhere else. You never want to leave any type of crack in your roof. Not only will this make it susceptible to leaks and other problems, but the larger the crack gets, the harder and more difficult it will be to repair.

Make sure the gutters are clean

Making sure your gutters are clean can help prevent a lot of problems, such as damage to your roof and fascia. If you have water pouring down due to clogged gutters, it can also lead to foundation damage or damage of your basement. You also want to make sure the gutters are secured tightly in place and tighten any loose spots.

If you want to check your gutters from the ground, you can attach a mirror to a broomstick to see if the gutters need cleaning or not. To clean the gutters from the ground, you can purchase a cleaner or make one out of a broom with a hook attached to the end.

Look for pest problems

You also want to be sure you look for any signs you have a problem with pests on or near your roof. Look for signs of a nest, damage, chewed up areas, hives or other types of damage. If you see signs of a pest problem, you want to get rid of them and make sure any damage is repaired immediately.

By providing your roof with proper maintenance, you will ensure you have a roof that's in good condition and postpone the need for costly repairs. Contact a company like Palmer Roofing for more information.

About Me
A Welder in the Office

Hi, I'm Caroline. Welding has always been really fascinating to me. One day, when I was at work in my office, we had a leaky pipe in the ceiling. After calling a plumber, he called a welder who came to repair the large, open pipe. As we were all sitting there trying to work, the welder just came in and started repairing the pipe! I had never worked on a construction site before, and I probably never will. But I started thinking about what it would actually be like to work on a construction site, which led to me exploring construction themes and writing this blog!
