Remodeling Your Home? Here's How To Keep Your Belongings Safe

Gregory Walker

If you are remodeling your home, you are probably excited about the improvements that you will be making to your household. One thing that you might be concerned about, however, is your belongings being damaged during the process. Fortunately, these ideas can help you keep your possessions safe while you are making major changes to your house.

Block it Off

Your first line of defense is to securely block off the area of your home that is being remodeled. This can be achieved by hanging large pieces of plastic sheeting in the doorway or simply by keeping the door shut.

Turn Off Your HVAC System

It's generally best to turn off your heater or air conditioner while remodeling is being actively done in your home. This is because dust, debris and chemical-related odors can all be sent throughout your home through your vents. If you are only working in one room of your home, you can close off the vent in that particular room.

Prevent Tracking Throughout the House

Construction debris that gets tracked through your home can cause your belongings to get dirty and dusty. Use rugs, large sheets of flattened cardboard or mats, and scatter them in pathways throughout your home. Then, you, your family members and any construction workers who are working on your home can clean their feet off and prevent them from getting on your carpet, your good rugs and elsewhere in your home.

Lock Away Your Valuables

If you hire a good, reputable construction company, then you shouldn't have to worry about much. If you lock away your jewelry, coins, cash and other small valuables, however, you will be less concerned about these items being stolen or going missing while the remodeling project is going on in your home.

Cover Furniture Up

Buy drop cloths to put over your furniture and other belongings. By covering these items up, you can help prevent them from becoming dusty or stained.

Transport Items to a Self Storage Unit

It's a good idea to rent a self storage unit at a place like Arthur's Self Storage while you are remodeling your home. Then, you can move items that you're worried about to the storage unit to ensure that they don't get damaged. Plus, you can store items that might get in the way of you getting your project done.

As you can probably see, there are a few different things that you can do to keep your belongings safe during your home remodeling project. Give these tips a try, and you are sure to be able to preserve your items without worrying about dirt, stains, dust or other issues.

About Me
A Welder in the Office

Hi, I'm Caroline. Welding has always been really fascinating to me. One day, when I was at work in my office, we had a leaky pipe in the ceiling. After calling a plumber, he called a welder who came to repair the large, open pipe. As we were all sitting there trying to work, the welder just came in and started repairing the pipe! I had never worked on a construction site before, and I probably never will. But I started thinking about what it would actually be like to work on a construction site, which led to me exploring construction themes and writing this blog!
